During the Middle Ages, Sandwich was one of England’s most important ports. The River Stour, which flows gently through the town today, once bustled with ships laden with goods from around the world. By the 13th and 14th centuries, Sandwich had grown into a prosperous town fortified with defensive walls and gates – many remnants can still be admired.

The Barbican & Toll Bridge
One of Sandwich’s most iconic medieval structures, the Barbican, served as a fortified entrance to the town. The adjacent Toll Bridge, where visitors once paid to enter, still welcomes travellers today.
St. Peter’s Church
A stunning example of medieval ecclesiastical architecture. This church has stood since the 13th century and even houses a rare ducking stool, once used for punishing wrongdoers. Today, they still welcome visitors to climb the tower and take in the 360-degree views.
The Guildhall
Built in 1579, the Guildhall is an exquisite example of Elizabethan architecture and remains the heart of Sandwich’s civic life. The Guildhall now hosts the local council meetings and we are able to utilise this space and setting for many of our events.
Richborough Roman Fort
The invading Roman army first came ashore here in AD 43, building a fortress to defend their bridgehead. A timber Roman gateway has been meticulously recreated on its exact spot. Climb it for panoramic views over the whole site and the Kent countryside.
