LITTLE GARDENS OF SANDWICH – A JUNE 4th PERAMBULATION

Come June, a handful of private gardens in Sandwich are opened for the public to have a wander around their well tended and manicured beds to inspire green fingers as well as green envy among the local populace who normally would not be able to have a peek over the ancient walls or through grilled entryways at these very private paradises.

This year eight gardens clustered around the ancient Norman church of St Clements had their garden gates thrown open and the crowds surged in past rose bowered walls…

… through hedgerow entrances…

… to wander past sculpted and blooming hedging…

… mountains of climbing roses…

… and jam packed herbaceous borders.

The variety of plantings in each garden is fascinating from contrasting textures of green…

… to sculpted shapes…

… to visions of tropical jungles.

Follow a path…

… to a secret garden…

… with gurgling fountain…

… and wander on through…

… to a forest glade…

… replete with fox.

More paths lead on to more gardens….

… of a more formal nature.

Of privet…

… of Topiary…

… and garden urns…

… and sculpture…

… not to mention the proverbial sundial.

Have a niche?

One garden with medieval walls has…

… the trick is to fill them…

… with roses if necessary.

That’s enough for now….

I’ll be back very soon with a report of the allotments greenhouses and frames which were opened to view for the first time which confirms, in spades, that the gardening skills of many of our green fingered neighbors are beyond doubt.
